Paul’s Walk: First Year Success Leads to Future Dreams
If
anyone had told us that the First Annual Paul’s Walk would raise over $9,200
(which was more then any other ALS Walk raised in the state of Virginia,
and tripled the previous high set for any JMU Greek philanthropy), we would
have told you that you were crazy. Little did we know, back in January 2006
when we sat down to begin planning the event, that it would become one of
the most successful ALS events on the east coast and set a new high water
mark for all JMU philanthropies to follow. None of the results would have
been possible without the support of friends like you. Though satisfied with
last years results, we look forward to build on last year’s success and raise
over $11,000 for ALS.
Paul’s
Walk developed out of a desire from both Pi Kappa Phi and Tri Sigma to hold
a philanthropy event that was close to our hearts. Though both organizations
have their respective national philanthropies, ALS was a cause for which
we both felt passionate. Pi Kapp and Tri-Sig both share ties with the Massey
family and saw an opportunity to develop a wonderful event for Paul Massey.
When diagnosed with ALS, the suffering spreads beyond just the victim. The
slow, degenerative effects that ALS has on its victims can take a heavy toll
on family members and loved ones. Paul’s Walk was developed not only out of respect for Mr. Massey, but also out of compassion for the entire Massey family, who fought a courageous and supportive battle with Paul. Their eagerness and enthusiasm for the event has been phenomenal, which is a testament to their father’s
fighting spirit.
Although ALS is considered a rare disease, it has tragically ripped through the Harrisonburg community, with six victims diagnosed over the last eighteen months. Given the debilitating nature of the disease, we saw an opportunity to coordinate the JMU Greek community and the Harrisonburg community and unite against this terrible disease. Our community chairman, James McHone along with Ms. Terry Denton, could not have been more supportive and encouraging during our inaugural run. The success of Paul’s Walk would not have been possible without their generous financial support and community leadership. We must also thank Calhoun’s Brewery, The Joshua Wilton House, Heavenly Ham and Mr. J’s Bagels
for their generosity as well as SOS Advertising for their phenomenal work
on our t-shirts. Lastly, special thanks must be sent out to Cathy Easter
from the ALS Association, who offered constant insight and guidance during
our inaugural run and continues to offer direction and support toward the
growth of Paul’s Walk.
Last years Paul’s Walk was a resounding success. However, Pi Kapp and Tri Sig will not be satisfied until a cure for ALS has been discovered. We are optimistic about meeting our financial goals for this year’s event and can not wait to share the accomplishment with you!
